A consortium lead by the ACT Division of General Practice (DGP) will build a network with peak health bodies, service providers and consumer organisations designed around preventative health care.

ACT DGP President, Dr Rashmi Sharma says one of the main features is an eReferral system linking GPs and allied health professionals such as dieticans and physiotherapists.

"If we can actually improve the electronic communication for example between the GP and the physio, and podiatrist, and the community nurse," Dr Sharma said.

"What we are hoping is that we will actually improve the efficiency of the system, make the patient journey easier and so improve health outcomes."

Dr Sharma says GPs and member groups will be working hard to implement some of the new measures from the official start date on 1 July, 2011.

"We've been doing a lot of leg work in the background leading up to the start date," she said.

"So I think that look, its not going to be that on the July 1st there is a dramatic turn around but I think that you will certainly find that from now, for the next couple of months we're going to be working slowly to start bringing all these new initatives into place."
