This month’s Forever Young Lunch ‘n Learn topic, “Preventing Non-Healing Wounds”, was the subject of two speakers at the Halloween-themed luncheon Wednesday.

The Halloween theme was linked with the health-care topic with the slogan, “Trick or Treat, HEAL my feet”, but it was a very serious subject addressed by Tim Heffern, the director of the TRMC Wound Healing Center, as well as the center’s Nurse Manager, Sue Stansell.

Stansell set the large audience at ease when she said she wasn’t given permission to show any “gory slides”. But she said foot care is a serious subject, especially with the large number of elderly and/or diabetes sufferers in Titus County.

A certified wound care nurse, Stansell reviewed the foot care for diabetics and people with poor circulation in their lower extremities.

She said the feet should always be kept clean and dry, and skin care lotion is helpful, but don’t leave any between your toes. Diabetic socks are designed with a weave to wick moisture away from the skin, she noted.
